Community Over Follower Count: How to Build Your Tribe Online

Updated: Oct 28, 2022

Have you ever felt like you're talking to a brick wall?

It's the worst feeling in the world, isn't it? You're trying to talk to someone who just won't listen. And if you're trying to build a community online, that's exactly where you'll end up if you don't do things right!

You've probably heard about building a tribe online before: it's all about creating an environment where people feel safe and respected, so they can share their knowledge and experiences with each other. But it's not always easy to figure out how. That's why we're going to give you three tips for building your own online community today!

How to Build an Online Community - Blog Post | Optimized Reality

BE TRANSPARENT & AUTHENTIC

To build an online community, be sure to share your story with honesty and openness so that others can connect with you on a deeper level. You'll find that if you're willing to be vulnerable, people will be more likely to trust you and want to join in on the conversation. Share stories about your life and the challenges that you've faced. This will help people feel like they know you better and make them more likely to follow your journey.

That's right—transparency is key. You want to be able to speak openly and honestly, without worrying about what people will think of you or what they're going to say about you. It's important that you do this because it sets the tone for how your followers will interact with each other and with you.

Transparency makes people feel safe, which in turn makes them more likely to engage with each other and with you. If they feel like they can trust you, they'll have no problem opening up about their struggles and challenges—and that means that you'll be able to pull them in by speaking directly to those challenges and pain points (which we’ll discuss later)!

KEEP THEM ENGAGED

The second key to building a tribe is to keep your ideal clients engaged by sparking conversation. Yes, engage with them instead of just talking at them. It means being present in the conversation that's happening on your platform or in your community. Ask questions that engage your followers and encourage them to get involved with your brand or business by sharing their thoughts with others in the community. Ask the question even if they seem obvious! People love talking about themselves and sharing their experiences with others because it helps them feel understood and supported by others who are going through similar things

Also – Don't be afraid of disagreement! This is where great ideas come from! If someone disagrees with something you've said or done before, ask them why so that everyone gets more insight into the issue at hand together instead of just one person telling everyone else how things should be done without any consideration for their opinions. Communication is a two way street, Sis.

SPEAK TO THEIR CHALLENGES

The third key is to pull them in by speaking to their challenges and pain points. If the goal is to create an engaged community, then there needs to be a reason for people to come into it—other than just "I want followers." If you are solving a problem for your ideal clients, speak directly to that solution and their challenges.

The best way to do this is by taking a compassionate approach—you don't want to come across as preachy or condescending! Instead of telling them what they should be doing, ask questions that get at the underlying reasons why they aren't achieving their goals yet (like: "What would happen if I could give you clarity about this?").

Find out what they're struggling with, what their biggest challenges are, and what they want most from the internet. This means talking to them directly in real life or via social media or email (if they've given you permission). For example, if someone has written an article about how she makes her own skincare products because she doesn't trust commercial brands, she'll probably be interested in hearing about other women who share her concerns about product safety as well as ways they've overcome those concerns or learned how to make their own products safely at home using ingredients that are easily available at local grocery stores.

FINALLY

Building a community means that you're creating an atmosphere where people who have similar goals and interests can come together and help each other grow. It also means that if someone has questions about what it's like to run a business, they'll be able to turn to other members of the group for advice and support.

Followers mean nothing if you don't have the right people following you. The people who enjoy your content and will ultimately work with you. That's why you should prioritize community over followers.
